How Kyphoplasty Works to Relieve Your Lower Back Pain

About 80% of adults experience lower back pain at some point in their lives. Sometimes, the pain goes away on its own. Other times, it doesn’t, especially if your lower back pain is the result of fractures or degenerative discs that cause your vertebrae to collapse.

Kyphoplasty could be the answer

Our pain management specialists at Blue Ridge Pain & Spine Associates may recommend a vertebral augmentation procedure called kyphoplasty to relieve your back pain. During this minimally invasive surgical procedure, one of our doctors inserts a balloon into your damaged vertebrae to help expand and reposition it. Then they inject a medical-grade cement into the vertebrae to stabilize the bone and provide long-term pain relief.

The goal is to get rid of your lower back pain so you can get out and enjoy life again. We use a combination of medications and interventional techniques like kyphoplasty, and we work in tandem with physical therapists and other members of your rehabilitation team.

What to expect

The first step is to come in for a consultation so we can learn your medical history and assess the cause of your lower back pain. Once we determine kyphoplasty is the right option for you, we schedule you for this minor outpatient surgical procedure. We also answer any questions you may have regarding your condition and treatment plan.

On the day of your surgery, we relax you or put you under general anesthesia as previously discussed and agreed upon. Then, over the next hour or so, we perform kyphoplasty under X-ray guidance. We use X-ray guidance so we can see exactly where to put the balloon and where to insert the cement.

By fixing your compressed disc in this way, we can significantly reduce or eliminate your back pain. When we’re done, you recover in a special room where our professional nursing staff closely monitors you until you are discharged. Complications from kyphoplasty are rare, but, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks to consider, such as bleeding or infection.
