About Dr. Swanson

Board-certified anesthesiologist and pain management physician Marc A. Swanson, MD, has been a pillar of the Roanoke Valley community for more than 20 years. His commitment to providing holistic, patient-focused care led him to found Blue Ridge Pain & Spine AssociatesBlue Ridge Pain & Spine Associates in 2009, which has expanded to multiple locations in Roanoke, Salem, and Christiansburg, Virginia.

Originally from Illinois, Dr. Swanson earned his medical degree at West Virginia University School of Medicine. He completed his internship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, pursued training in neurology at the University of Wisconsin, and finished his residency in anesthesiology at the University of Virginia. He also served as assistant professor of surgery at the West Virginia University School of Medicine for six years.

Dr. Swanson has treated thousands of patients in the Roanoke Valley and constantly rates as a top physician in various surveys. His passion for relieving human suffering led Dr. Swanson to begin practicing pain medicine while working as an anesthesiologist at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. As a leader in the early development of pain medicine, Dr. Swanson served as the chairman of the multidisciplinary pain committee and chief of the pain management service line before opening a successful private practice that would develop into Blue Ridge Pain & Spine AssociatesBlue Ridge Pain & Spine Associates.

Dr. Swanson considers himself fortunate to have a wonderful wife, Cathy Jo, and two fantastic children. He feels honored to have had the opportunity to make a positive impact on thousands of lives and looks forward to helping new patients.
